(1)
Zeniarai Benten Shrine is one of Kamakura’s most unique and mystical destinations, famous for its sacred cave where visitors wash their money for good fortune. Founded in 1185, the shrine blends Shinto and Buddhist traditions and is surrounded by rocky cliffs, tunnels, and nature. The peaceful atmosphere and traditional rituals make it a memorable cultural experience.

What to See & Do

  • 🏮 Walk through the rock-carved tunnel and a corridor of white torii gates to enter the hidden grounds 🏔️
  • 💰 Wash your coins or banknotes at the Okugū (inner sanctuary), a mystical cave where a sacred spring flows 🌊
  • 🐍 Observe the Snake Statues and offer raw eggs, believed to be the favorite food of the shrine’s messenger 🥚
  • ⛩️ Explore the Shichifuku Shrine on-site, dedicated to the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan 🍀
  • 📸 Capture the “hidden village” aesthetic created by the surrounding jagged cliffs and lush forest 🌿

How to Get There

  • 🚉 From Kamakura Station: Take a 20–25 minute walk from the West Exit through the Sasuke residential area 🚶
  • 🚌 By Bus: Take a bus to the “Genjiyama Park” area or “Sasuke-ichi-chome” followed by a 10-minute walk 🚐
  • 🚗 By Car: Parking is extremely limited and the roads are narrow; using public transport is highly recommended 🅿️
  • 🗺️ Hiking: The shrine is a popular stop along the Daibutsu Hiking Trail connecting Kita-Kamakura to the Great Buddha 🥾

Travel Tips

  • 🧺 The Ritual Kit: Pay 100 yen at the office to receive a bamboo basket, incense, and a small candle 🕯️
  • 🧼 The Washing: Place money in the basket and use the ladles to pour spring water over it three times 💧
  • 💸 Spend to Gain: Tradition suggests that you should spend the washed money soon on something positive to invite good fortune back 🧧
  • 🧖 Bring a Handkerchief: If you wash paper bills, you’ll need a small towel to pat them dry before putting them back in your wallet 👜
  • 🐍 Special Days: Visit on the Day of the Snake (according to the zodiac calendar) for amplified luck in financial matters 🗓️
