Yapahuwa Rock Fortress

0
(0)
Rising dramatically from the plains of Kurunegala District, the Yapahuwa Rock Fortress is one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating ancient capitals. Built in the 13th century by King Buvanekabahu I, Yapahuwa served as a royal fortress and briefly held the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.
Today, it stands as a majestic ruin — a blend of history, architecture, and adventure — often compared to Sigiriya but much quieter and less crowded.

About the Fortress :
The main attraction is the ornate stone stairway, decorated with beautifully carved lions and guardstones — masterpieces of Sri Lankan stonework. At the top, you’ll find the ruins of the royal palace, ancient stupas, and panoramic views of the countryside.
The climb (about 30–40 minutes) is moderately steep but completely worth it.
