Westerplatte is one of the most historically significant sites in Poland, known as the place where the first shots of World War II were fired in 1939. Located near the port of Gdańsk, this peaceful peninsula now serves as a memorial area, offering visitors a quiet space to reflect on history while enjoying views of the Baltic coast

What to See & Do

  • 🗽 Visit the Monument to the Defenders of the Coast 🛡️ a massive stone tribute standing atop a high mound 🏔️
  • 🚶 Walk along marked historical paths 🛤️ and see the preserved ruins of the barracks and Guardhouse No. 5 🏚️
  • 📜 Learn about the heroic 7-day defense 🛡️ of the depot through detailed outdoor information boards 📖
  • 🌊 Enjoy sea views 🔭 and the quiet natural surroundings where the Dead Vistula meets the Baltic Sea 🌅
  • 📸 See the iconic “Nigdy Więcej Wojny” (Never Again War) sign 🕊️ near the ruins 🕊️

How to Get There

  • 🚌 Take a direct bus 🚍 (Line 106 or 138) from the main railway station (Gdańsk Główny) for a 20-30 minute ride 🚉
  • ⛴️ Board a seasonal ferry or water tram 🚢 from the Old Town embankment for a scenic journey past the shipyards ⚓
  • 🚗 Travel by taxi or ride-share 🚕 for easy and quick access directly to the main parking area 📍
  • 🏁 Arrive via Galeon Lew 🏴‍☠️—a stylized “pirate” ship that departs from the Motława River for a themed experience ⚓

Travel Tips

  • ⏳ Allow enough time ⌛ to read the information boards; they provide essential context that makes the ruins come alive 📖
  • 👟 Wear comfortable shoes 👟 as the site is spread out and involves walking on various terrains 👣
  • 🤫 Respect the memorial atmosphere 🙏; this is a place of remembrance and many locals come here to pay their respects 🕯️
  • 🌬️ Prepare for strong winds 🧥—the peninsula is very exposed to the sea, so a windbreaker is recommended even in summer 🌊
