Troopers Hill

5
(1)
Troopers Hill is a local nature reserve in east Bristol, known for its open landscapes, wildflower areas, and elevated viewpoints overlooking the city and River Avon. It is a peaceful spot for walking, nature watching, and enjoying panoramic views away from busy tourist areas.

What to See & Do

  • 🏭 **Industrial History:** See the iconic 18th-century **Copper Smelting Chimney** at the summit and the square engine house chimney at the hill’s foot.
  • 🦋 **Rare Wildlife:** Spot rare mining bees, butterflies, and buzzards thriving in the unique acidic soil.
  • 🔭 **Panoramic Views:** Enjoy 360-degree views of the **River Avon**, the Bristol skyline, and even the hills beyond the city.
  • ✨ **Stargazing:** Visit after dark; its status as a **Dark Sky Discovery Site** makes it one of the best spots in Bristol for astronomy.

How to Get There

  • 🚌 **Bus:** Take the **44** or **45** from the city centre to “Marling Road” (approx. 20 mins). A short walk through Summerhill Terrace leads to the field.
  • 🚶 **Walking:** Accessible via the **River Avon Trail** for a scenic hike from the Harbourside or Conham River Park.
  • 🚗 **Car:** There is **no dedicated car park**. Limited street parking is available on Malvern Road (BS5 8JA) or Greendown (BS5 8BS).

Travel Tips

  • 🥾 **Footwear:** Sturdy shoes are essential; paths are unsurfaced and can be very muddy or slippery after rain.
  • ♿ **Accessibility:** The **Malvern Road** entrance is the flattest route, providing a wheelchair-accessible path to the top of the hill.
  • 🌬️ **Kite Flying:** It is almost always windy at the summit—perfect for kites but bring an extra layer!
  • 🐶 **Dog Owners:** Keep dogs on a lead near the steep cliff edges at the southern end of the site.

Suggested Itinerary

  • 🕓 **04:30 PM** – Arrive via Malvern Road and wander through **Troopers Hill Field** toward the summit.
  • 🕔 **05:30 PM** – Explore the **audio trails** or look for the “leaning” chimney while taking in the river views.
  • 🕖 **07:00 PM** – Settle in near the top chimney for one of the most spectacular **sunsets** in Bristol.
