The Pinnacles

(0)
The Pinnacles are one of the most dramatic natural landmarks in Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia. Located on the slopes of Gunung Api, these razor-sharp limestone spires rise high above the rainforest canopy. The trek to The Pinnacles is considered one of the most challenging and rewarding adventures in Malaysia, recommended for fit and experienced hikers.

What to See & Do

  • ⛰️ Hike through dense rainforest and steep limestone terrain, ascending 1,200 meters over just 2.4 kilometers 🧗
  • 🧗 Conquer the “Danger Zone” using a series of 17 vertical aluminum ladders and fixed ropes along the final ascent ⛓️
  • 📸 Enjoy panoramic views of sharp limestone pinnacles from the summit viewpoint, overlooking the Melinau Gorge 🤳
  • 🌺 Observe unique highland flora including pitcher plants (Nepenthes), orchids, and moss-covered ancient trees 🌿
  • 🏊 Cool off in the crystal-clear Melinau River near Camp 5 after your descent from the mountain 🌊

How to Get There

  • 🛥️ Travel by longboat (1–2 hours) from the Park HQ up the Melinau River to Kuala Litut 🚤
  • 👣 Trek 9 km (approx. 3 hours) on a flat jungle trail from Kuala Litut to reach the riverside Camp 5 base camp 🗺️
  • 🧗 Begin the summit climb directly from Camp 5; the ascent typically takes 3–5 hours depending on fitness ⏱️
  • 📝 Advance booking is mandatory as Camp 5 has limited capacity and guides must be assigned in advance 🎟️
  • ✈️ Fly into Mulu Airport (MZV) via MASwings from Miri or Kuching to start your 3D2N or 4D3N expedition 🛩️

Travel Tips

  • 💪 Strong fitness level and a head for heights are required; the trail is near-vertical and technical in the final sections 🧗
  • 👟 Wear proper hiking boots with excellent grip; “Kampung Adidas” rubber shoes are a local favorite for the slippery rocks 🌦️
  • 🧴 Carry at least 3 liters of water; most hikers leave 1 liter at the halfway point to use during the descent 💧
  • 🧤 Bring gardening or weightlifting gloves to protect your hands from the sharp limestone and ropes 🛡️
  • 🍲 Pack your own food for 3 days; Camp 5 has a kitchen but no restaurant (snacks and drinks are sold at a small tuck shop) 🥫

Suggested Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Longboat to Kuala Litut, trek 9km to Camp 5. Spend the afternoon swimming in the river and prepping gear 📍
  • Day 2 (06:30 AM) – Begin the steep climb to the viewpoint. Aim to reach the summit by 10:30 AM for lunch ⛰️
  • Day 2 (Late Morning) – Carefully descend (often slower than the climb) and return to Camp 5 for a second night 🛌
  • Day 3 – Trek back to Kuala Litut and take the longboat return to park headquarters or the airport 🚤
