Te Mata Peak is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Rising above the surrounding plains, the peak offers wide panoramic views across vineyards, farmland, and coastline. The peak is a popular destination for travelers, photographers, and outdoor lovers. Clear weather provides outstanding visibility and peaceful natural surroundings.

What to See & Do

  • 🌅 Watch the sunrise over the Pacific or catch the golden “afternoon glow” at sunset ☀️
  • 🌲 Walk through the Giant Redwoods forest 🪵 home to over 200 towering California redwoods 🇺🇸
  • 📸 Capture wide landscape photographs 🎞️ of the Heretaunga Plains and the jagged limestone ridge 🏔️
  • 🦅 Spot hang gliders and paragliders 🪁 soaring above the cliffs from the summit viewpoints 🔝
  • 🏃 Explore 99 hectares of parkland 🗺️ with trails ranging from easy strolls to the challenging “Goat Track” 🧗

How to Get There

  • 🚗 By Car: Follow Te Mata Peak Road to the summit. Note that the upper road above Peak House is closed from 10 PM to 5:30 AM daily 🛑
  • 🥾 On Foot: Access the park via the Main Gates on Te Mata Peak Road or the Tauroa Road entrance 👣
  • 📍 Location: Only 5km from Havelock North village, making it a perfect quick detour or a half-day adventure 🇮🇸

Travel Tips

  • 🧥 Bring warm layers 🌬️ even in summer, the wind at the 399m summit can be biting ❄️
  • 🧴 Use sun protection ☀️ as the upper tracks are highly exposed with limited tree cover 🧢
  • ⚠️ Drive carefully 🚘 the road narrows significantly near the top—only confident drivers should attempt the final stretch 🛣️
  • 🐕 Keep dogs under control 🐾 many areas allow off-lead walking, but stock (sheep) often graze on the slopes 🐑

Suggested Itinerary

  • 🚗 08:00 AM – Drive to the summit viewpoint 🔭 to see the early morning light hit the bay 🌊
  • 🥾 09:00 AM – Take the “Big Redwoods Track” 🌲 (1 hour loop) to walk among the massive 40-meter trees 🪵
  • 🧘 10:30 AM – Relax at the Saddle Lookout 🏞️ with a picnic or a quick coffee at Peak House ☕
