St. John’s Fortress

(0)
St. John’s Fortress is a large hilltop fortification overlooking Šibenik and the surrounding coastline. Built in the 17th century, the fortress was designed to protect the city from inland attacks and today offers some of the widest panoramic views in the area. From the upper walls, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Šibenik Old Town, nearby fortresses, and the Adriatic Sea. The open layout and elevated position make it a peaceful place to enjoy scenery and photography.

What to See & Do

  • ⭐ Explore the “star-shaped” bastions, a masterpiece of 17th-century military architecture 🛡️
  • 📸 Capture the ultimate “Hero Shot” of Šibenik with the Cathedral and St. Michael’s Fortress in one frame 🎞️
  • 🏛️ Visit the newly created “Educational Campus” inside the fort to see how soldiers lived during the siege 🛌
  • 🌊 Spot the Krka River estuary as it flows into the Adriatic from the northern ramparts 🛶
  • 🕊️ Find a quiet stone bench on the eastern wall for a peaceful moment away from the city crowds 🧘

How to Get There

  • 🚶 Foot: Start at the “Poljana” square and follow the brown “Tvrđava sv. Ivana” signs uphill 🏁
  • 🚖 Taxi: A ride from the Riva (waterfront) costs approx. €8–€12 and saves you hundreds of stairs 🚕
  • 🚗 Parking: There is a small designated parking area near the entrance for those with their own vehicles 🅿️

Travel Tips

  • 🕒 Best Timing: 9:00 AM for cooler air or 7:00 PM for the best sunset views in Šibenik ⏳
  • 🎟️ Entrance: A single ticket for St. John’s is approx. €7, but the €15 combo pass is much better value 🪙
  • 💧 Hydration: There is a small kiosk at the entrance, but it’s best to carry your own bottle 🧴
  • 📱 Pro-Tip: Check the local weather; if the “Bura” wind is blowing, the visibility is incredible, but it will be very windy at the top! 💨
