Skútustaðagígar Pseudocraters

0
(0)
Skútustaðagígar Pseudocraters are among the most distinctive geological features around Lake Mývatn. These circular formations look like volcanic craters but were created when hot lava flowed over wetlands, generating explosive steam bursts. The result is a landscape filled with cone-shaped structures surrounded by calm lake scenery. The area is peaceful and easily walkable, offering open views of the lake and surrounding hills. Visitors often explore the crater edges, take photos, and enjoy the natural contrasts of water, grasslands, and volcanic shapes

What to See & Do

  • ❄️ Walk the “Gígahringur” (Crater Circle) trail to see the symmetrical snow-capped cones 🌋
  • 📸 Photograph the craters from the viewpoint near Gígur Visitor Centre for a panoramic view 🏔️
  • 🦅 Spot the Gyrfalcon, which often hunts near the lake during the winter months 🔭
  • 🌌 Witness the Northern Lights dancing over the wide, dark horizon of the lake basin 🌠
  • 🦢 Observe Whooper Swans and ducks in the ice-free sections of the Lake Mývatn wetlands 🦆

How to Get There

  • 🚙 Drive 1h 15m from Akureyri; the southern route via Road 848 is paved but snow-heavy ❄️
  • 🅿️ Free parking is available next to the Gígur Visitor Centre and Sel Hótel Mývatn 🚗
  • 🛑 Check road.is before departing; January weather can close roads quickly 🗺️
  • ⛽ Refuel in Akureyri or the village of Reykjahlíð before your exploration ⛽

Travel Tips

  • 🕒 Plan your walk between 11:30 AM and 3:00 PM to utilize the best winter light 🌅
  • ⛸️ Wear ice spikes or crampons; the paths over the craters can be extremely slippery ⛸️
  • 🧥 Dress in windproof thermal layers; the open plains around the lake offer no windbreak 🌬️
  • 📱 Log your travel plan at safetravel.is for safety in remote North Iceland 🗺️
