The Ritigala Forest Monastery, located about 40 km northeast of Anuradhapura, is one of Sri
Lanka’s most mystical and ancient Buddhist sites.
Hidden deep within the Ritigala Mountain Range, this 4th-century BC monastery was once home
to meditating monks seeking solitude and silence.
Surrounded by mist-covered peaks, giant trees, and cool forest air, Ritigala offers visitors a
sense of mystery and timeless peace.
Stone pathways, meditation platforms, and bathing ponds are scattered across the mountain,
built with incredible precision and respect for nature.
Local legends say Ritigala was also linked to the Ramayana, believed to be one of the places
where Hanuman rested.
