Pompey’s Pillar

0
(0)
Pompey’s Pillar is one of Alexandria’s most prominent ancient landmarks, standing as a tall granite column from the Roman period. Despite its name, the monument is not connected to Pompey, but was erected in honor of Emperor Diocletian. Located on a hill near the remains of the Serapeum, the pillar rises above surrounding ruins and offers insight into Alexandria’s long Roman history. The site provides a quiet atmosphere for exploring ancient architecture. For travelers, Pompey’s Pillar offers a clear connection to Alexandria’s classical past and a chance to see one of the largest monolithic columns ever erected

What to See & Do

  • 🏛️ View the towering granite column: Stand at the base of this 285-ton monolith, topped with a massive Corinthian capital 🗿.
  • 🏺 Explore the Serapeum ruins: Descend into the underground galleries where the sacred Apis bull was once worshipped and ancient scrolls were stored 📜.
  • 🦁 The Red Granite Sphinxes: Photograph the two beautifully preserved sphinxes that guard the site, remnants of the Ptolemaic era 📸.
  • 🚶 Walk the Ancient Acropolis: Navigate the network of stone foundations and “nilometers” used by ancient Egyptians to measure the river’s floods 📐.
  • 🔍 Historical Markers: Look for inscriptions and repurposed stone blocks from older Pharaonic temples used in the site’s construction 🪨.

How to Get There

  • 🚕 By Taxi/Uber: The most efficient way. Ask for “Amoud El Sawari.” It is located in the Karmouz district, about a 10-15 minute ride from the city center 🚗.
  • 🚃 By Tram: Take the yellow tram toward the Karmouz area; the site is a short walk from the local stop 🚋.
  • 🚗 By Car: Limited street parking is available near the entrance, though a taxi is generally recommended due to the narrow streets of the surrounding neighborhood 🅿️.

Travel Tips

  • 👟 Comfortable Shoes: The site involves climbing stone steps and walking on uneven, dusty surfaces. Wear sturdy footwear 👣.
  • ☀️ Sun Protection: The hilltop is fully exposed with very little shade. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen 🧴.
  • 🕒 Beat the Crowds: Arrive at 9:00 AM. This is a popular stop for tour buses; getting there early ensures you can photograph the pillar without crowds 📅.
  • 🎫 Entry Fee: Tickets are approximately 100-150 EGP for foreign visitors (approx. 20-40 EGP for students with a valid ID) 🎫.

Suggested Itinerary

  • 🕒 09:30 AM – Arrive at the Pompey’s Pillar entrance and take in the scale of the column from the main path 📍.
  • 🕒 10:00 AM – Explore the underground Serapeum and the niche rooms carved into the rock foundations 🏛️.
