Perfume Point

0
(0)
Perfume Point is a small but scenic coastal area located near the entrance to Napier Port. It offers open views of the harbor, ocean, and surrounding coastline. This spot is popular for short walks, photography, and watching ships enter and leave the port. It is especially peaceful during early morning and late afternoon.

What to See & Do

  • 🚢 Watch harbor and ocean activity ⚓ as ships navigate the narrow channel directly in front of the reserve
  • 🏁 Photograph the Napier Sailing Club Starter Box ⛵—a unique octagonal building used to oversee yacht races
  • 🪑 Snap a fun photo at the Ahuriri Giant Chairs 📸, a whimsical art installation perfect for “Alice in Wonderland” style shots
  • 🏄 Observe local surfers at the Perfume Point surf break 🌊, known for its crumbly “longboarder” waves on the north side of the channel
  • 🎣 Join the locals at this popular fishing spot 🐟, often bustling with people casting for Kahawai or Kingfish 🎣
  • 🚶 Walk the Ahuriri Estuary path 🦢, which begins just south of the point and winds through protected wetlands 🌿

How to Get There

  • 🚗 By Car: A 5-minute drive 🚙 from Napier CBD; the large **free car park** 🅿️ is a popular spot for locals to “park and look” at the sea
  • 👣 On Foot: A flat, 10-minute walk 👟 from the **West Quay** restaurants or a 30-minute scenic walk from Marine Parade 🚶
  • 🚲 By Bike: Directly on the **Hawke’s Bay Trails** 🚵; it serves as a perfect rest stop between Napier and Westshore 🏁

Travel Tips

  • 🌬️ Wind Protection: Bring a windbreaker 🧥; even on calm days, the “sea breeze” at the point is significantly stronger than in town
  • 🌅 Golden Hour: Visit during sunset 🌇 to see the sun dip behind the ranges, lighting up the harbor and the hills in orange and gold 🎞️
  • 🏊 Safe Swimming: For a dip, walk 200m south to Ahuriri Beach (Spriggs Park) 🏖️, which is much safer than the deep channel waters 🛑
  • 🔭 Ship Spotting: Check the Napier Port schedule 🛳️ online to time your visit with the arrival of massive container or cruise ships ⛴️

Suggested Itinerary

  • 📍 16:00 PM – Arrive at Perfume Point 🏁 and take photos with the Giant Chairs 🪑
  • 📸 16:30 PM – Walk the coastal path 👣 toward the Sailing Club ⛵ to see the colorful starter box and watch the surf 🌊
  • ⛴️ 17:30 PM – Find a bench or stay in your car to watch harbor activity 🔭 as the fishing fleet returns to the Iron Pot ⚓
  • 🍤 18:30 PM – Walk into Ahuriri Village 🏘️ for a seafood dinner at The Thirsty Whale or Shed 2 🍷
