Parakrama Samudra Reservoir

(0)
Stretching across the horizon like an inland sea, Parakrama Samudra — also known as the Sea of Parakrama — is one of Sri Lanka’s greatest man-made lakes and a shining symbol of ancient hydraulic engineering. Built by King Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th century, this vast reservoir still irrigates thousands of acres of farmland today, fulfilling the king’s vision that “Not even a drop of rainwater should flow into the ocean without being used.”

The Great Lake of a Great King :
Covering nearly 2,500 hectares, Parakrama Samudra is a combination of five smaller reservoirs linked by channels and embankments — a masterwork of ancient water management. It supplied water to both the royal capital of Polonnaruwa and the surrounding rice fields, sustaining the region’s prosperity for centuries. Standing by its shores today, you can feel the scale and ingenuity of Sri Lanka’s ancient civilization — a blend of practicality, spirituality, and beauty.
