Palace of the Grand Master

5
(1)
The Palace of the Grand Master is one of the most impressive medieval castles in Greece. Located inside Rhodes Old Town, it once served as the headquarters of the Knights of Saint John and today houses museums, courtyards, and grand halls.

What to See & Do

  • 🏰 Explore Medieval Halls: Wander through the grand “Hall of Council” and the “Dining Hall” to see antique furniture and heavy armor 🛡️
  • 🏛️ Admire Ancient Mosaics: View the world-renowned “Medusa” and “Nine Muses” mosaics, brought from the island of Kos during the Italian restoration 🏺
  • 🛡️ Learn Knightly History: Visit the permanent ground-floor exhibitions showcasing the history of Rhodes from the Early Christian era to the Ottoman conquest ⚔️
  • 🔭 Panoramic Views: Walk the upper ramparts for sweeping views of the Old Town rooftops and the blue Aegean Sea 🌅

How to Get There

  • 🚶 On Foot: A 10-minute uphill walk from Mandraki Harbour ⚓ or the main Old Town squares 🏘️
  • 🚕 By Taxi: Have your driver drop you at D’Amboise Gate or Liberty Gate for the shortest walk to the palace entrance 🏁
  • 🚌 By Bus: Take a local bus to Rimini Square, then enter through the main gates and follow the signs for “Palazzo” 🚍

Travel Tips

  • 🎟️ Entry & Hours: Expect to pay around €10–€15 for a full-price ticket; consider a combo ticket to include the Archaeological Museum 🏺
  • 👟 Footwear: Wear non-slip shoes as the medieval cobblestones and polished marble floors can be uneven and slick 👣
  • Timing: Allow at least 1.5 hours to fully appreciate the exhibitions and the upper-level apartments ⏱️
  • 🌡️ Stay Cool: Visit in the early morning or after 5:00 PM during summer to avoid the midday heat, as the stone walls can get very warm ☀️

Suggested Itinerary

  • 📍 09:30 AM – Enter the Palace of the Grand Master 🏰 to beat the midday tour groups ☀️
  • 🏛️ 10:30 AM – Tour the upper-floor apartments to see the Medusa Mosaic and medieval tapestries 🖼️
  • ⚔️ 12:00 PM – Exit and walk down the Street of the Knights 🏛️, admiring the heraldic emblems of the different “Languages” 🛡️
  • 🥗 01:00 PM – Enjoy a traditional lunch 🥘 at a hidden courtyard taverna in the quiet backstreets of the Old Town 🍷
