Pabalu Vehera

0
(0)
Tucked away from the main crowds of the ancient city, Pabalu Vehera is one of Polonnaruwa’s lesserknown yet deeply peaceful stupas. Believed to have been built during the reign of King Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th century, this beautiful monument offers a quiet glimpse into the spiritual life of ancient Sri Lanka. Its name “Pabalu Vehera” translates to “Bead Stupa,” possibly derived from small glass beads discovered in the area during excavations — suggesting a rich past of devotion and daily life around the temple complex.

History & Significance:
Unlike the grand Rankoth or Kiri Vehera stupas, Pabalu Vehera stands smaller in scale but rich in history. It’s believed to have been built by a queen or royal consort of King Parakramabahu, dedicated to Buddhist worship.
Surrounding the main stupa are the remains of small shrines and image houses, creating an intimate sacred space once used by monks and pilgrims alike.
