ORP Błyskawica

4
(1)
ORP Błyskawica is one of the most important naval monuments in Poland and a key attraction in Gdynia’s harbor area. This historic destroyer served during World War II and is now preserved as a museum ship. Visitors can explore its decks and learn about Poland’s maritime and military history in an authentic setting

What to See & Do

  • Explore the Main Deck: Walk past the massive 120mm Bofors guns and anti-aircraft mounts that defended the ship during the Battle of the Atlantic 🛳️
  • 🕯️ “The Loyal Warship” Exhibition: Visit the updated 2026 permanent exhibit in the ship’s interior, featuring original relics from the 1940 Norwegian Campaign and D-Day 🎖️
  • ⚙️ Descent into the Engine Room: Follow the narrow gangways into the heart of the ship to see the authentic boilers and turbines that once made it the fastest destroyer in Europe 🚀
  • 🎖️ Virtuti Militari: View the highest Polish military decoration awarded to the ship—it is the only vessel in Poland to hold this honor for gallantry 🛡️
  • 📸 Harbor Views: Capture stunning photos of the Gdynia skyline and the “Dar Pomorza” sailing ship from the destroyer’s elevated bridge 🔭

How to Get There

  • 👣 On Foot: It is located directly on Aleja Jana Pawła II at the Southern Pier, a short walk from Kościuszko Square 🚶
  • 🚆 By Train: Take the SKM commuter train to Gdynia Główna; from there, it’s a 15-minute walk through the modernist city center to the pier 🚉
  • 🚗 By Car: Use the paid parking lots along the waterfront or the underground parking near the Gdynia Film Centre 📍
  • 🏁 Public Transport: Local buses (ZKM Gdynia) stop frequently at the nearby “Skwer Kościuszki” stop 🚍

Travel Tips

  • ❄️ Winter Closure: The ship is traditionally closed to visitors from November 1 to March 31 for seasonal maintenance—plan accordingly 🗓️
  • 👟 Wear Sturdy Shoes: You will encounter steep “ladders” (stairs) and narrow, low-ceiling passages—sneakers are much better than heels or flip-flops 🧗
  • 🎫 Combined Tickets: Purchase a “Museum + Ship” ticket at the Naval Museum (ul. Zawiszy Czarnego) to save money and include a visit to the nearby ORP Sokół submarine
  • 🕒 Check the Flag: As a commissioned ship, it may close briefly for official Navy ceremonies—always check the Muzeum Marynarki Wojennej website for daily updates 🏛️
