Among the elegant ruins of Polonnaruwa’s Sacred Quadrangle stands one of Sri Lanka’s most artistic
monuments — the Nissanka Latha Mandapaya. Built by King Nissanka Malla in the 12th century, this
graceful stone pavilion is famous for its uniquely carved lotus-shaped columns, a design unseen
anywhere else in the country.
The Story Behind the Pavilion:
King Nissanka Malla, known for his deep devotion to Buddhism and fine taste in art, constructed this
pavilion to listen to Buddhist chanting (Pirith). The structure features a small Stupa at its center,
surrounded by eight curved stone pillars that resemble lotus stems swaying gently in the breeze.
Each column is finely detailed, showing the beauty and creativity of ancient Sinhalese architecture. Even
in ruins, the Nissanka Latha Mandapaya radiates elegance and harmony — a testament to Sri Lanka’s
spiritual artistry.
