Mulu Summit Trail

0
(0)
The Mulu Summit Trail is one of the most demanding trekking routes in Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia. This multi-day rainforest climb takes travelers through dense jungle, steep terrain, and remote mountain sections to reach the summit of Gunung Mulu. It is recommended only for physically fit and experienced trekkers seeking a true wilderness adventure.

What to See & Do

  • 🏔️ Trek through primary rainforest and mountainous terrain, ascending from 40m to over 2,300m above sea level ⛰️
  • 🏕️ Experience remote jungle camps (Camps 1, 3, and 4) featuring basic shelters and the raw sounds of the deep jungle 🌌
  • 🌅 Reach the summit of Gunung Mulu for panoramic views of the Melinau Gorge, Gunung Api, and the distant Brunei coastline ☁️
  • 🌺 Observe diverse plant species including exotic orchids, rhododendrons, and rare carnivorous pitcher plants 🍃
  • 🦜 Encounter unique highland wildlife such as montane birds and squirrels that are endemic to the Mulu mountain range 🐿️

How to Get There

  • 🏢 Start your trek from the Gunung Mulu National Park headquarters after a mandatory safety briefing with your guide 📍
  • 👣 Follow the historic 1920s route that begins with river crossings before heading steeply into the highlands 🧗
  • 📝 Access only with a licensed guide and advance booking (at least 1-2 weeks prior) due to strictly limited camp capacities 🎟️
  • ✈️ Fly into Mulu Airport (MZV) from Miri or Kuching, as the park remains disconnected from the Sarawak road network 🛩️
  • 🎒 Consider hiring a local porter (max 15kg load) to assist with carrying food and heavy camping gear 🧺

Travel Tips

  • 💪 Excellent physical fitness and endurance are required for 8–10 hour climbing days on slippery, vertical terrain 🧗
  • 🎒 Carry essential trekking gear including a 10–15°C sleeping bag, headlamp, and waterproof dry bags for all electronics 🛡️
  • 🌧️ Prepare for humid and muddy trail conditions; non-slip hiking boots are mandatory, and “Kampung Adidas” are often recommended 👟
  • 🍲 Bring all your own food and cooking fuel (gas cartridges are available at the Mulu Gallery) as camps are self-catering 🥫
  • 🧥 Pack warm layers for the summit; temperatures at Camp 4 can drop significantly once the sun goes down ❄️

Suggested Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Trek from Park HQ to Camp 3 (8–10 hours). A long day ascending through lowland and montane forest 📍
  • Day 2 – Continue climb to Camp 4 (4 hours). A shorter but steep trek into the beautiful, swirling mossy forest 🌫️
  • Day 3 – Summit attempt (3 hours up) and descent back to Camp 3. Enjoy the sunrise view before heading down 🌅
  • Day 4 – Final descent (6–7 hours) back to Park HQ. Return by mid-afternoon for a celebratory meal and shower 🚿
