The Mirisawetiya Stupa, one of the oldest and most respected monuments in Anuradhapura, was built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BC. It stands among the four great stupas of the Sacred City and symbolizes the unity and devotion of the ancient Sinhala kingdom. Legend says King Dutugemunu built this stupa as a form of repentance after forgetting to offer miris (chili) to the monks before his meal — a reminder of humility and respect in Buddhist tradition. Today, the brilliant white dome surrounded by calm gardens offers both spiritual peace and architectural beauty to visitors.
