Lighthouse Reef

(0)
Lighthouse Reef is one of the most accessible coral reef areas in Dahab, located close to the town center. It is popular among snorkelers, beginner divers, and those who want a relaxed reef experience. The reef features colorful corals, tropical fish, and clear waters that make it suitable for both day and night dives. Its convenient location allows visitors to enter the water directly from the shore. For travelers, Lighthouse Reef offers an easy and enjoyable way to explore Red Sea marine life without traveling far.

What to See & Do

  • 🤿 Snorkel Close to Shore: Wade in directly from the beach to see colorful Parrotfish, Blue-spotted Rays, and resident Turtles just meters from the shoreline 🐢.
  • 🌊 Dive with Local Centers: Explore the “Saddle” and the deeper coral pinnacles. The easy entry makes it the perfect spot for “Check Dives” or refreshing your skills 🤿.
  • 🐠 Observe Coral & Reef Fish: Marvel at the dense colonies of Salad Coral and Fire Coral, which host thousands of orange Anthias and camouflaged Scorpionfish 🐟.
  • 🌙 Night Diving: Witness the reef transform after dark. Using a torch, you can spot hunting Octopuses, glowing Lionfish, and Spanish Dancers 💃.
  • 🧘 Relax by the Seaside: Between sessions, use the beanbags and sun loungers of the adjacent cafés to enjoy the sea breeze 🕊️.

How to Get There

  • 🚶 On Foot: The reef is located right at the northern end of the Dahab Promenade (Masbat area). If you are staying in the town center, it is a 2-minute walk 👣.
  • 🚕 By Taxi: If you are coming from the Lagoon or Southern Dahab, ask for “The Lighthouse.” It’s a very common 5-minute drop-off point 🚗.
  • 🧭 Proximity: It is situated directly in front of the famous Lighthouse Café and several major dive shops like Desert Divers or Poseidon 📍.

Travel Tips

  • 🧴 Reef-Safe Sunscreen: With the high volume of visitors, protecting the water quality is vital. Use only mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreens to prevent coral bleaching 🪸.
  • 👟 Water Shoes: The entry point is rocky and can be slippery. Wearing sturdy water shoes or diving booties will make getting in and out much easier 👣.
  • 🚫 Zero Touch Policy: The corals here are delicate. Avoid standing on rocks that might actually be living coral heads, and never touch the marine life 🐢.
  • 🕒 Best Timing: For the clearest visibility, aim for an early morning session (around 8:00 AM) before the midday “diver rush” and before the afternoon winds pick up 🌬️.

Suggested Itinerary

  • 🕒 10:00 AM – Arrive at the Lighthouse Reef and drop your gear at a seaside café 📍.
  • 🕒 10:30 AM – Head out for a snorkeling or diving session. Explore the shallow seagrass area first to look for Seahorses before heading to the reef wall 🤿.
  • 🕒 1:00 PM – Enjoy lunch nearby at one of the many boardwalk restaurants like Nirvana or Shark Restaurant 🍽️.
  • 🕒 6:00 PM – Gear up for an optional night dive. This is the best way to see the reef’s “nocturnal data” and hidden creatures 🔦.
