Jensen-Olson Arboretum is a peaceful public garden located north of Juneau, Alaska. It features a wide variety of Alaska-native plants, trees, and flowers, along with well-maintained walking paths overlooking the ocean.

What to See & Do

  • 🌸 Marvel at the **Nationally Accredited Collection of Primula** (primroses) with over 170 varieties 🌿
  • 🍎 See the historic **100-year-old apple tree** and heritage vegetable gardens dating back to 1902 ⛏️
  • 🌀 Visit **The Word Garden** to arrange message stones or relax on art-inspired benches 🧘
  • 🐋 Walk down to the shoreline to explore tidal pools overlooking **Favorite Channel** 🌊
  • 🥾 Hike the short **Point Caroline Trail** through a lush hemlock forest to a cliff-top view 🏔️
  • 📸 Capture the “Blue Poppies” and vibrant lilies against a backdrop of the Chilkat Mountains 📷

How to Get There

  • 🚗 Drive 20–25 minutes north from Juneau; look for the sign 0.7 miles past the Shrine of St. Therese 🛣️
  • 🚕 Hire a taxi or rideshare; note that local city buses (Capital Transit) do not reach this far north 🛑
  • 🅿️ Use the free small parking lot off Glacier Highway; an accessible path leads down to the gardens 🏁

Travel Tips

  • 👟 Wear sturdy walking shoes; paths consist of gravel, stone, lawn, and beach rock 🪨
  • 📅 Plan for **peak bloom in May** for primroses, or July for the bountiful vegetable gardens 🥕
  • 🕒 Check seasonal hours: Summer (Wed–Sun, 9–5) and Winter (Fri–Sun, 9–4) ⌚
  • 🚫 Leave pets at home; they are not allowed in the gardens (though welcome on Point Caroline Trail) 🐕
  • 🧥 Bring layers; the ocean frontage at Pearl Harbor can be significantly cooler than inland Juneau 🌬️
