The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, is one of the most sacred
and historically significant places in Sri Lanka.
Planted over 2,300 years ago, this sacred fig tree is believed to be a sapling from the original
Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, India — the very tree under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment.
The tree was brought to Sri Lanka by Sanghamitta Theri, daughter of Emperor Ashoka of India,
during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa.
To this day, Buddhists and travelers from around the world visit the site to pay homage, meditate,
and experience the calm spiritual energy under its ancient branches.
It is the oldest living tree in the world with a known planting date, symbolizing peace,
compassion, and the deep-rooted Buddhist heritage of Sri Lanka.
