Hverfjall Crater

0
(0)
Hverfjall is a large volcanic tephra crater formed by an explosive eruption thousands of years ago. Its perfectly rounded shape and steep black slopes make it one of the most impressive geological structures in North Iceland. The crater rim offers wide panoramic views over the Mývatn area. Visitors can walk up marked trails that lead to the crater’s edge. From the top, the landscape reveals lava fields, wetlands, and distant volcanic formations, creating a dramatic and expansive scene.

What to See & Do

  • 🏔️ Stand on the rim of a 1km-wide explosion crater, one of the largest in the world 🌋
  • 📸 Capture the stark contrast of dark volcanic ash against pristine January snow ❄️
  • 🚶 Walk the 3.2km rim trail for 360-degree views of the entire Mývatn region 🔭
  • 📽️ Visit the filming site where the “White Walkers” marched in Game of Thrones ⚔️
  • 🧘 Experience the deep silence and vast scale of the Icelandic highlands from a safe height 🤫

How to Get There

  • 🚙 Drive 1 hour 15 mins from Akureyri; 4×4 with studded tires is essential for winter gravel ❄️
  • 🛑 Check umferdin.is daily—mountain passes in the North can close suddenly 🗺️
  • 🅿️ Use the northern parking lot (easier trail) or the southern lot for a steeper ascent 🚗
  • ⛽ Refuel in Reykjahlíð (5 mins away) before heading into the more remote highland edges ⛽

Travel Tips

  • 🕒 Plan your hike between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM to maximize the short 2026 winter daylight 🌅
  • 🧤 Wear heavy-duty windproof gear; gusts at the rim can be twice as strong as at the base 🌬️
  • ⛸️ Use ice spikes or crampons; the steep 20° incline is often a sheet of ice in January ⛸️
  • 🥤 Carry a thermos with a hot drink—there are no facilities or shelter at the crater ☕

Suggested Itinerary

  • 📍 09:30 AM – Depart Akureyri, heading through the snow-laden Goðafoss pass 🚗
  • 🥾 11:00 AM – Arrive at Hverfjall; begin the steep 20-minute climb to the northern rim 🏔️
  • 📸 12:00 PM – Complete the rim walk, photographing the crater floor and distant mountains 🌊
  • 🥪 01:30 PM – Quick lunch in the nearby village of Reykjahlíð or the Cowshed Cafe 🍽️
  • 🧖 03:00 PM – Thaw out at the Mývatn Nature Baths as the blue hour sets in 🛁
