Hanamikoji Street, located in the Gion district of Kyoto, is one of Japan’s most famous traditional streets. It is lined with historic wooden teahouses, known as ochaya, where geisha and maiko perform. The street offers visitors an authentic experience of Kyoto’s cultural heritage, charming atmosphere, and preserved architecture.

What to See & Do

  • 🏮 Explore the historic ochaya (teahouses) that line the southern section of the street, including the legendary Ichiriki Chaya with its vermilion walls ✨ 🏛️
  • 🏯 Admire the well-preserved machiya townhouses featuring kimusuko (wooden trellises) and inuyarai (bamboo fences) that define Kyoto’s Edo-period charm 🏚️ 🦁
  • 👘 Visit the Gion Geisha Arts Museum or Gion Corner at the southern end of the street to see authentic performances of tea ceremonies and maiko dances 🎭 🏛️
  • 🐉 Walk to the end of the street to enter Kennin-ji Temple, Kyoto’s oldest Zen sanctuary, famous for its powerful Twin Dragons ceiling painting ⛩️ 🙏
  • 🍽️ Indulge in high-end Kaiseki dining at world-renowned restaurants like Gion Karyo or Yasaka Endo, housed within converted historic residences 🍱 🍷

How to Get There

  • 🚇 Take the Keihan Line to Gion-Shijo Station (Exit 6) and walk east for three minutes to reach the main Hanamikoji intersection 🚶 🗺️
  • 🚌 Board Kyoto City Bus 100 or 206 from Kyoto Station and get off at the ‘Gion’ stop; the street entrance is just a two-minute walk away 🚏 🚍
  • 🚕 Ride a taxi for roughly 15–20 minutes from Kyoto Station and ask for “Hanamikoji-dori Minamigawa” to be dropped at the traditional south side 🚗 🏁
  • 👣 Walk from nearby Yasaka Shrine or the Shijo-Kawaramachi shopping district, as Hanamikoji serves as the central artery of the Gion district 🚶 🗺️

Travel Tips

  • 📸 Observe the 2025 Photography Ban: Taking photos in private side alleys (like Kosode-koji) can result in a JPY 10,000 fine. Stick to the main public road 🛑 🤳
  • 🤫 Respect the Geiko and Maiko: Never stop, touch, or block the path of geisha heading to appointments; they are working professionals, not tourist attractions 🤫 🕊️
  • 🕒 Visit between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM for crowd-free architectural shots, or at 5:00 PM for the “Golden Hour” when lanterns begin to glow 🌄 🕯️
  • 🎫 Note that the street is divided by Shijo Avenue: The southern half is the preserved historic district, while the northern half features modern bars and clubs 🗺️ 🏮

Suggested Itinerary

  • 5:00 PM – Begin your walk at the intersection of Shijo Avenue and Hanamikoji, entering the southern historic preservation zone.
  • 5:30 PM – Stroll down the cobblestone path toward Kennin-ji Temple, observing the elegant wooden facades and spotting maiko as they glide to work.
  • 6:00 PM – Capture the lantern-lit evening atmosphere (on the main street only) as the “ochaya” begin to welcome their evening guests.
  • 6:30 PM – Enjoy a pre-booked traditional dinner at a local ryotei or head to Gion Corner for a 60-minute cultural performance.
