(1)
Grugapark Essen is one of the largest and most popular green spaces in the Ruhr region. It combines botanical gardens, landscaped lawns, walking paths, and recreational areas, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature within the city

What to See & Do

  • 🌵 Journey through Themed Glasshouses, including a tropical rainforest, a primeval forest with “living fossils,” and a dedicated cactus house.
  • 🎨 Admire the Hundertwasser House, a fairytale-like building with a golden onion dome designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
  • 🦩 Visit the Animal Enclosures to see flamingos, exotic birds, and a petting zoo with Cameroon sheep and goats.
  • 🚂 Take a nostalgic ride on the Grugabahn, the narrow-gauge park train that loops through the most scenic areas.
  • 🌷 Explore the Botanical Garden featuring the Alpinum, a Japanese elm forest, and the vibrant “Color Terraces” for seasonal flower displays.

How to Get There

  • 🚆 Take the U-Bahn (U11) directly to the Messe West/Süd/Gruga station for the main park entrance.
  • 🚌 Use local bus line 142, which stops at multiple points around the park perimeter.
  • 🚗 Parking is plentiful in the lots serving Messe Essen (P1, P2), providing easy access to the park gates.
  • 🚲 The park is integrated into the regional cycling network and is easily reachable from the city center via dedicated paths.

Travel Tips

  • ✨ Parkleuchten (Jan/Feb): Don’t miss the 2026 Parkleuchten festival (Jan 24 – March 1), where the park is transformed by stunning light art installations.
  • 👟 Walking: With over 70 hectares to cover, comfortable shoes are essential. A 1.3 km barrier-free path is available for those with limited mobility.
  • 💶 Admission: Standard entry is approx. €4.00–€5.00, but prices may increase during special events like “Parkleuchten.”
  • 🧺 Picnics: While there are excellent cafés and restaurants (like the Orangerie), the park has designated barbecue stands that can be reserved in advance.
