Gerlos Pass is a high mountain road that connects the Ziller Valley with the Pinzgau region. Known for its winding curves and dramatic alpine scenery, the pass offers travelers one of the most scenic driving routes in western Austria. The route passes through forests, alpine meadows, and open mountain landscapes, providing frequent viewpoints and photo opportunities. Gerlos Pass is popular with drivers, cyclists, and travelers who enjoy slow journeys through nature.

What to See & Do

  • 🏔️ Drive the Gerlos Alpenstraße for stunning views of the Hohe Tauern range 🏎️
  • 🌊 Stop at the Krimml Waterfall viewpoint to capture Europe’s highest falls 📸
  • 🛶 Visit the Durlaßboden Reservoir for a high-altitude lake walk or swim 🏊
  • 🦅 Spot golden eagles and marmots in the protected alpine moorlands 🐾
  • 🎡 Experience the 8 hairpin bends (serpentines) with a total length of 12km 🛣️

How to Get There

  • 🚗 Start in Zell am Ziller and follow the B165 mountain road toward Gerlos 📍
  • 🏍️ Take the “8 Serpentines” on the eastern ramp for a classic motorcycling experience 🏁
  • 🚲 Challenge yourself to the 1,531m summit on a road bike from the Krimml side 🚵
  • 🚌 Use the regional Bus 4094 which traverses the pass between Zell and Königsleiten 🎫

Travel Tips

  • ❄️ In January, ensure your vehicle has winter tires and check for “Kettenpflicht” (snow chains) ⛓️
  • 💳 Have your Zillertal Arena ski pass ready; it covers the toll fee for skiers 🆓
  • 🧥 Bring a warm layer; the temperature at the 1,531m summit is much lower than in the valley 🌬️
  • ⛽ Ensure your tank is full before leaving Zell am Ziller or Krimml, as stations are sparse on the pass ⛽
