Étretat Cliffs

(0)
The Étretat Cliffs in Normandy are famous for their dazzling white chalk formations, natural arches, and dramatic coastal scenery. This coastline offers peaceful walking paths, photography spots, and unforgettable ocean views.

What to See & Do

  • 🐘 Witness the Porte d’Aval 🌊 a colossal natural arch described by Guy de Maupassant as an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea 🏔️
  • 📍 Explore the Aiguille Creuse 🕵️ the 55-meter “Hollow Needle” rock that supposedly hides the treasure of the Kings of France 💎
  • 🔭 Hike to the Manneporte ⛰️ the largest and most majestic arch, located just further south along the customs path 🥾
  • 📸 Capture the “Damsel’s Room” (La Chambre des Demoiselles) 🏰 a small cave at the top of the cliff with a tragic local legend 📜
  • ⛳ View the Étretat Golf Course 🏌️ one of the most scenic in Europe, perched right on the edge of the chalk cliffs 🌊

How to Get There

  • 🚶 Climb from the Boardwalk ⛱️ via the steep “Chemin des Douaniers” stairs (approx. 180 steps) at the southern end of the beach 🧗
  • 🚗 Drive to Étretat 📍 (about 40 minutes from Le Havre) and use the “Grand Val” parking lot at the town’s entrance 🏁
  • 🚌 Take the Ligne 24 regional bus 🚍 from Le Havre or Fécamp, which drops you in the heart of the village 🏁
  • 🥾 Hike the GR21 🗺️ the famous long-distance trail that passes directly over the summit of the Falaise d’Aval 🌲

Travel Tips

  • ⚠️ Stay on marked paths 🛑 as the chalk cliffs are fragile and subject to sudden, dangerous landslides ⚠️
  • ⏰ Check the tide schedule 🌊 if you plan to visit the “Trou à l’Homme” cave at the cliff’s base; never enter as the tide is rising 🕙
  • 🧣 Bring a windbreaker 💨 as the plateau is extremely exposed to Atlantic gusts even on sunny days 🧣
  • 👟 Wear sturdy hiking shoes 👟 for the uneven flint paths and the steep ascent from the promenade 🏔️

Suggested Itinerary

  • 🌅 8:00 AM – Arrive early 🌊 to beat the crowds and catch the soft morning light on the white chalk 📸
  • 🧗 9:00 AM – Hike to the Porte d’Aval ⛰️ and walk out toward the Needle for a closer view of the arch 🔭
  • 🥾 10:00 AM – Continue south 🏔️ along the cliff edge to admire the massive Manneporte arch 🌊
  • ☕ 11:30 AM – Descend to the village 🥐 for a local cider or coffee in a historic half-timbered café 🍎
