The Eth Pokuna, also known as the Elephant Pond, is one of the most impressive ancient water
reservoirs in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.
Located near the Abhayagiri Monastery Complex, this massive pond was built to supply water to
thousands of resident monks during the ancient kingdom’s peak.
Measuring over 150 meters in length and 50 meters in width, Eth Pokuna showcases the
advanced hydraulic engineering of ancient Sri Lanka.
Fed by underground channels connected to other tanks, it still holds water year-round.
Surrounded by trees, ruins, and tranquility, Eth Pokuna is a peaceful place for reflection and
photography.
