Dar Pomorza

Dar Pomorza is a famous tall ship permanently moored in Gdynia and one of Poland’s most recognized maritime symbols. Once used as a training vessel, the ship now operates as a museum where visitors can explore cabins, decks, and learn about life at sea and Poland’s sailing traditions.

What to See & Do

  • Explore the Decks: Walk the expansive wooden main deck and admire the intricate rigging and massive masts that once carried 2,100 square meters of sail ⛵
  • 🧭 Visit the Command Bridge: See the original navigation instruments and the massive steering wheel that guided the ship through the world’s toughest oceans 🌊
  • 🍽️ Officer’s Salon & Cabins: Step into the surprisingly elegant teak-paneled interiors where the captain and high-ranking officers lived and worked 🏛️
  • 🛌 Midshipmen’s Quarters: Experience the cramped living conditions of the students, seeing the hammocks and the “Battery” room where hundreds of cadets lived 🎒
  • 📸 Iconic Photography: The ship’s white hull and towering masts provide the perfect backdrop for photos, especially when mirrored in the calm harbor waters 🤳

How to Get There

  • 👣 On Foot: It is located directly on Aleja Jana Pawła II, about a 5-minute walk from Kościuszko Square 🚶
  • 🚆 By Train: Take the SKM commuter train to Gdynia Główna; it’s a scenic 15-20 minute stroll through the modernist city center to the water 🚉
  • 🚗 By Car: Use the paid parking zones along the pier or the large parking lot near the Gdynia Aquarium at the very end of the point 📍
  • 🏁 Public Transport: Local buses frequently stop at “Skwer Kościuszki,” which is the gateway to the harbor area 🚍

Travel Tips

  • 🧗 Watch Your Step: The ship features original, very steep maritime stairs and low door frames—mind your head and feet as you transition between decks 👟
  • ❄️ Winter Schedule: Like the nearby Błyskawica, the ship may have limited hours or closures during the coldest winter months (January–February) for restoration 🗓️
  • 🎟️ National Maritime Museum: The ship is a branch of the NMM; check for “Multi-site” tickets if you plan on visiting the Crane or the Maritime Museum in Gdańsk as well 🎫
  • Duration: Allow roughly 45 to 60 minutes for a thorough self-guided tour of the interior and exterior 🕒

Suggested Itinerary

  • 11:00 AM – 🏁 Board the Dar Pomorza ⛵ to explore the officer’s quarters and the upper rigging decks ⚓
  • 12:30 PM – 🍽️ Enjoy a seaside lunch—try the fresh catch of the day at one of the “fish fry” spots along the pier 🐟
  • 02:00 PM – 🚶 Take a harbor walk toward the Gdynia Aquarium or visit the ORP Błyskawica destroyer moored just behind you 📸
