Clifford’s Tower

4
(1)
Clifford’s Tower is the surviving keep of York Castle and one of the city’s most important Norman landmarks. Standing on a grassy mound near the River Ouse, the tower offers visitors insight into York’s medieval history and impressive panoramic views over the city.

What to See & Do

  • 🏛️ Explore the new internal walkways that lead you through rooms unopened to the public for centuries 🗝️
  • 🏰 Climb to the 360-degree roof deck for panoramic views of York Minster and the distant hills 🔭
  • 📜 Learn about the tragedy of 1190 through respectful and immersive historical displays 🕯️
  • 🛡️ View the Royal Latrines and the 13th-century chapel, still intact within the stone walls ⛪

How to Get There

  • 🚶 On Foot: A 15-minute walk from 🚄 York Station; follow signs for the “Castle Quarter” 📍
  • 🚌 By Bus: Any bus to Tower Street or the Piccadilly stop puts you right next to the mound 🚌
  • 🚗 By Car: Use the Castle Car Park (YO1 9SA) located directly at the foot of the tower 🅿️

Travel Tips

  • 👟 **Shoes:** Wear flat, comfortable shoes; the stairs are modern but there are many of them! 🪜
  • 🎟️ **English Heritage:** Free entry for members; others should book a timed slot online to avoid queues 🎫
  • 🌬️ **Weather:** If winds exceed certain speeds, the roof deck may close for safety; check their social media on gusty days 🚩
  • 📸 **Top Photo Tip:** Capture the Golden Hour over the Minster from the North-West corner of the platform 🌅
