The Chartreuse Monastery, also known as the Grande Chartreuse, is one of the most important monastic sites in France. Founded in the 11th century, it is the motherhouse of the Carthusian Order, set deep within the remote Chartreuse Mountains north of Grenoble. Visitors cannot enter the monastery, but the surrounding trails and the museum offer a rich understanding of the monks’ life and spiritual traditions.
