How to Get There

  • 🚗 By Car: A 20-minute drive 🚙 from Nelson CBD. For the Cable Bay end, follow SH6 north to Hira and turn onto Cable Bay Road 📍
  • 🏁 The Glen End: Access from Glenduan, just 12km north of Nelson. Note that parking at the Glenduan end is more limited 🅿️
  • 🚕 Taxi/Shuttle: A convenient option 🚕 if you don’t have two cars; local shuttles can be booked to drop you at one end and collect you at the other 🏁

Travel Tips

  • 🐑 Lambing Closure: The track closes annually for lambing from August 1 to October 10 🚫; plan your visit outside these dates
  • 🥾 Sturdy Footwear: The track is steep and can be muddy and slippery ⚠️ after rain; wear hiking boots with good grip 👟
  • 💧 No Water On-Trail: There are no drinking water sources 🥤; carry at least 2 liters per person and high-energy snacks 🍎
  • ☀️ Sun & Wind: Much of the trail is across open pasture; wear high-SPF sunscreen 🧴 and a windbreaker for the exposed ridgelines 🌬️

  • 🥾 09:00 AM – Start the Cable Bay Walkway 🏁 from the Glenduan (The Glen) end 📍

  • 🏖️ 12:30 PM – Descend into Cable Bay 🌊; complete the walk and relax on the pebble beach 🧘
