10 Tung Chung Fort

5
(1)
Tung Chung Fort is a small but meaningful historical stop on Lantau’s north side, tucked beside village lanes not far from the modern Tung Chung town centre. Behind its plain walls is a layered story: coastal defence, piracy fears, and the changing needs of a growing community. If you like places that feel local rather than polished, this fort is worth the detour. It is a quiet counterpoint to Lantau’s big-ticket sights. Walking through the gate, you can see the old cannons lined along the walls and imagine why this spot mattered when the coastline was far less secure. The fort has also been reused over time – it served different community roles after its military days, which is part of what makes the visit interesting. The experience is simple and short, but it fits well into a practical itinerary. You can visit after landing at Tung Chung MTR Station, before heading to the cable car, or on your way back from South Lantau. It is also a good place to photograph weathered stonework without the heavy crowds that surround the island’s headline attractions.
