08 Cheung Sha Beach

5
(1)
Cheung Sha Beach is Lantau’s classic “leave-the-city-behind” coastline: a long stretch of pale sand backed by green hills and a single road that keeps the area feeling simple and open. The beach is split into Upper and Lower sections. Upper Cheung Sha is quieter and more spacious; Lower Cheung Sha is where you will find more activity, with cafés, watersports operators, and a relaxed weekend crowd. What makes Cheung Sha special is the scale. You can walk for a long time with the sea on one side and jungle-covered slopes on the other, and still find a quiet patch for reading or swimming. On some days you may even spot water buffalo wandering near the creek at the lower end, which adds to the island atmosphere. It is also surprisingly easy to reach. A direct bus from Tung Chung crosses the hills in about 20 minutes, turning Cheung Sha into a realistic half-day plan. Come with sun protection, take advantage of facilities like showers and changing rooms, and choose your swim time around lifeguard service hours for safer conditions.
