Qaitbay Citadel

(0)
Qaitbay Citadel is a 15th-century fortress located at the entrance of Alexandria’s Eastern Harbor. Built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, the citadel played an important role in defending the city’s coastline. The stone walls, towers, and sea-facing battlements offer wide views of the Mediterranean Sea. Walking through the citadel provides a strong sense of Alexandria’s maritime and military history. For travelers, Qaitbay Citadel combines history, architecture, and scenic sea views in one iconic Alexandrian landmark

What to See & Do

  • 🏰 Explore fortress walls and towers: Walk through the three floors of the main tower and navigate the internal corridors designed for ancient archers 🛡️.
  • 🌊 Enjoy Mediterranean sea views: Climb the outer ramparts for a 360-degree panorama of the crashing waves and the Alexandria skyline 🏙️.
  • ⚔️ Learn about Alexandria’s defenses: Observe the massive granite columns—repurposed from ancient Roman ruins—integrated into the fortress walls for structural strength 🏺.
  • 🛶 Walk around the harbor area: Explore the vibrant Anfushi district surrounding the citadel, where you can watch shipbuilders at work on traditional wooden vessels 🔨.
  • 📸 Take coastal photographs: Capture the contrast between the pale yellow limestone of the fortress and the deep turquoise of the sea 🤳.

How to Get There

  • 🚕 By Taxi/Uber: The most direct route. Simply ask for “Qalaa” (Fortress). It is located at the far western end of the Corniche 🚗.
  • 🚃 By Tram: Take the yellow tram to the Anfushi or Qasr El Tin stop; from there, it is a pleasant 10-minute walk through the local fish market district 🚋.
  • 🚶 On Foot: If you are already exploring the Anfushi district or the Ras El Tin area, the citadel is the primary landmark visible from any coastal point 👣.

Travel Tips

  • 👟 Comfortable Shoes: The floors and ramparts consist of uneven, centuries-old stone blocks. Wear shoes with good grip to avoid slipping 👣.
  • ☀️ Sun Protection: The open courtyards and upper walls offer no shade; the white limestone reflects intense heat. Bring a hat and sunscreen 🧴.
  • 🕒 Timing: Arrive as soon as the gates open at 9:00 AM to enjoy the interior before the midday heat and the large tour groups arrive 📅.
  • 🚧 Safety First: Some of the upper rampart walls are low or have wide gaps. Exercise caution when taking photos near the edges 🛑.
