Medina Azahara, or Madinat al-Zahra, is one of Spain’s most impressive archaeological sites,
located just 8 km west of Córdoba. Built in the 10th century by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III, this
vast Moorish city served as the political and administrative capital of Al-Andalus. Once a
symbol of Islamic power and sophistication, it was abandoned less than a century after its
construction.
Today, visitors can explore the ruins of palaces, mosques, gardens, and pavilions that reveal
the grandeur of the Umayyad dynasty. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018,
Medina Azahara offers a unique glimpse into the golden age of Islamic Spain.
