Puna Pau is a small volcanic crater that served as the quarry for the red stone topknots, known as pukao, which were placed on top of many Moai statues across Easter Island. The site provides insight into the advanced stone-working skills of the Rapa Nui people. Visitors can see unfinished pukao and learn how these massive stones were carved and transported.
