Steiner Tor is the most famous historic gate of Krems an der Donau and a key symbol of the town’s medieval past. Dating back to the late Middle Ages, this stone gate once protected the city from invasions and controlled trade routes. The structure features impressive towers, arches, and inscriptions that reflect its defensive and cultural importance within the old town walls. For travelers, Steiner Tor is an essential landmark that marks the entrance to Krems Old Town and offers excellent photo opportunities

What to See & Do

  • 🏰 View the Medieval Architecture: Admire the contrast between the 15th-century Gothic base and the elegant 18th-century Baroque octagonal tower 🧱
  • 🛡️ Decode the Inscriptions: Look for the famous “AEIOU” motto of Emperor Friedrich III, which stands for Austriae Est Imperare Orbi Universo (“It is Austria’s destiny to rule the world”) 👑
  • 🦅 Spot the Imperial Coats of Arms: See the three coats of arms from 1756 adorning the gate, including the double-headed eagle and the arms of Empress Maria Theresa 🏛️
  • 🌊 Find the Flood Memorial: On the inner side of the gate, locate the memorial stone commemorating the catastrophic ice flood of 1573 ⛵
  • 🏙️ Modern Contrast: View the contemporary metal cube installation by Leo Zogmeyer at the base, which commemorates the town’s Jewish history 🕯️

How to Get There

  • 👟 On Foot: Just a 10-minute walk from the Krems Main Station. Follow the signs toward the center/Old Town 📍
  • 🚆 By Train: Take a direct regional train (REX) from Vienna’s Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof; the walk from the station to the gate is flat and easy 🚉
  • 🚗 By Car: Use the Steiner Tor Garage or the parking area at the nearby Kunstmeile (Art Mile) for quick access 🏁

Travel Tips

  • 🕒 Accessible 24/7: You can walk through the gate at any time, but visit during the “Blue Hour” (just after sunset) to see the tower beautifully illuminated 🌙
  • 🤳 Best Photo Angle: For the classic shot, stand on the Südtiroler Platz (the outer side) to capture the towers and the Baroque gable in one frame 📸
  • 📖 Read the Plaques: Information boards near the base provide history in both German and English, detailing the gate’s survival through the demolition of the city walls 📜
  • 🛍️ Gate to Shopping: Use the gate as your marker—once you pass through, you are at the start of the 700m-long pedestrian shopping street 🧣
