Coastal Cycle Trails

0
(0)
Napier’s coastal cycle trails are part of the Hawke’s Bay cycle network and offer flat, scenic routes along the coastline, through parks, and past key attractions. These trails are suitable for casual riders, families, and cycling enthusiasts. They provide a relaxed way to explore Napier’s coastal scenery and surrounding areas.

What to See & Do

  • 🌊 Ride along scenic coastal paths 🚲 on the Water Ride, stretching from the Waitangi Star Compass to Bay View
  • 📸 Stop at viewpoints and beaches 🏖️ like the Marine Parade Viewing Platform and the quiet sands of Westshore
  • 🏘️ Explore parks and waterfront areas ⚓ including the Ahuriri Estuary, home to rare migratory birds 🦢
  • 🍦 Enjoy relaxed cycling experiences 🍦 with mandatory stops for real-fruit ice cream in Ahuriri or Te Awanga
  • 🐋 Combine cycling with sightseeing stops 🦈 at the National Aquarium or the MTG Museum, both right on the trail

How to Get There

  • 🚲 By Bike: Direct access from Marine Parade and the Napier i-SITE; follow the blue “Great Ride” markers 🔵
  • 🎟️ Bike Rentals: Napier City Bike Hire and Tākaro Trails 🚲 offer standard and e-bikes from approx. $65–$75 NZD per day 💰
  • 🗺️ Trails Network: Connected to the Landscapes and Wineries rides, allowing for longer trips to Cape Kidnappers or Taradale 🏁

Travel Tips

  • 🪖 Safety First: Helmets are legally required in NZ 🇳🇿; most rental shops include them along with a lock and a pannier bag 🎒
  • 🧴 Sun & Water: The coastal route is highly exposed; carry high-SPF sunscreen and plenty of water (refill stations are available at Marine Parade) 💧
  • 👣 Shared Paths: Give way to pedestrians 🚶 and use your bell 🔔 when passing; the trails are popular with walkers and families
  • 🌬️ Check the Wind: Ride against the wind first so you have a tailwind for the journey back to your accommodation 💨

Suggested Itinerary

  • 🚲 09:00 AM – Rent your bike at Marine Parade 🏁 and head north toward the Napier Port 🚢
  • ⚓ 10:30 AM – Stop at Ahuriri Village 🏘️ for a coffee at Milk & Honey and a photo with the Giant Chairs 🪑
  • 🏝️ 12:00 PM – Continue to Westshore Beach 🏖️ for a rest and some coastal photography 📸
  • 🏘️ 14:00 PM – Return to the city via the Ahuriri Estuary 🦆 or loop back along the harbor for a 15km total trip 🚲
