Birdwatching Areas

0
(0)
The birdwatching zones around Látrabjarg are famous for hosting some of the largest seabird colonies in Iceland. During the summer months, puffins and various seabird species nest along the steep cliff faces, offering close viewing opportunities in a natural and protected environment. Visitors often walk designated cliff paths to safely observe bird activity. The calm atmosphere, combined with the dramatic height of the cliffs, makes this one of Iceland’s most rewarding birdwatching locations

What to See & Do

  • 🐧 Spot Atlantic Puffins nesting in grassy burrows just feet away from the paths 📸
  • 🦅 Watch millions of razorbills and guillemots swarming the vertical cliff faces 🔭
  • ⚓ Visit Bjargtangar Lighthouse, the westernmost building in Europe 🏠
  • 🌊 Capture panoramic views of the North Atlantic where Greenland is only 300km away 🌅
  • 📜 Learn about the heroic 1947 rescue of the British trawler Dhoon sailors 🚢

How to Get There

  • 🚗 Drive 1 hour from Patreksfjörður via Road 612 (narrow, gravel sections) 🗺️
  • ⛽ Fill your gas tank in Patreksfjörður; there are NO fuel services near the cliffs 🛑
  • 🅿️ Use the large, free parking area located directly at the Bjargtangar Lighthouse 🚗
  • 🚐 Join a guided day tour from Patreksfjörður if you prefer not to drive the gravel 🎟️

Travel Tips

  • 📅 Visit between May and mid-August; puffins leave for the sea by late August 🗓️
  • 🛑 Never cross the safety ropes or white lines; the grassy edge is undercut and fragile 🚷
  • 🧘 Lie flat on your stomach to safely photograph birds nesting on lower ledges 📸
  • 🧥 Pack windproof and waterproof clothing; the weather can change in minutes 🌬️
