Nature Reserves in Vantaa

5
(1)
Vantaa is home to several protected nature reserves that preserve forests, wetlands, and natural habitats within the city area. These reserves offer peaceful environments where visitors can enjoy nature while respecting conservation efforts.

What to See & Do

  • 🦅 Meteoria Söderfjärden: Visit Finland’s most important resting area for cranes, featuring a visitor center and a dedicated birdwatching tower 🔭
  • 🌲 Öjen Nature Trail: Hike through old-growth forests with 200-year-old trees, lush riverbank groves, and barren rocky pine stands 🥾
  • 📉 Öjberget: Explore the “Devil’s Field” (boulder fields) and giant’s potholes while walking the nature trail overlooking the archipelago 🪨
  • 📸 Nature Photography: Capture wintering birds or the dramatic shadows of the boreal forest during the late sunrise 🌤️
  • 🧘 Quiet Reflection: Find peace in the Öjbergsmossen bog, a serene wetland area reachable by boardwalks 🍃

How to Get There

  • 🚌 By Bus: Take Line 4 from the City Hall/Market Square toward 📍 Sundom. For Söderfjärden, get off at the “Marenintie” stop 🚏
  • 🚗 By Car: Parking is available directly at the 📍 Öjen Nature Trail entrance (Öjenintie 9) and the 📍 Meteoria Visitor Centre 🅿️
  • 🚲 By Bicycle: A 30–40 minute ride from the city center via the coastal bike paths leading west toward the Sundom bridge 🏁

Travel Tips

  • 🥾 Gear Up: Wear waterproof, insulated boots and use ice grippers (studdable soles) if the trails are packed with snow or ice ❄️
  • 🚶 Stay on Path: Follow the color-coded markers (usually orange or blue) to protect the fragile moss and ground cover 🛡️
  • 🔋 Warm Batteries: Keep your camera or phone batteries in an inner pocket; cold weather significantly drains power in these latitudes 🌡️
  • ♻️ Leave No Trace: There are no trash bins in the heart of the reserves—please carry out everything you bring in 🚮

Suggested Itinerary

  • 🕘 8:30 AM – Arrive at the 📍 Öjen Nature Trail entrance 🏁
