Lantau Peak (Fung Wong Shan) is one of Hong Kong’s classic mountain hikes today, rising steeply
above Ngong Ping and rewarding strong legs with huge views. The terrain is mostly stone steps
and exposed ridgeline, so the climb feels direct and physical – you gain altitude quickly, and the
scenery changes with every turn.
Most hikers come for the light. At sunrise, the ridges glow and the sea horizon appears behind
layers of hills; later in the day, the summit becomes a wide lookout over South Lantau’s beaches
and the deep-green interior of the country park. It is also a surprisingly spiritual hike because the
route passes close to the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, blending nature and culture in a
single outing. Treat this as a serious walk rather than a casual stroll. Weather can shift fast at the
top, and the ridge can be windy even when the city is warm. If you plan a sunrise climb, carry a
headlamp and start in darkness; for an easier plan, hike late afternoon and descend before
nightfall.
