Trøllkonufingur Rock

(0)
Trøllkonufingur, also known as the Witch’s Finger, is a tall sea stack rising from the Atlantic Ocean near the village of Sandavágur. According to local legend, the rock was formed when a witch tried to pull the Faroe Islands toward Iceland. Today, the viewpoint offers travelers dramatic coastal scenery and powerful ocean views.

What to See & Do

  • 🗿 View the Trøllkonufingur sea stack, a spiky 313m monolith steeped in ancient myth 🌊 ✨
  • 🔭 Enjoy panoramic ocean views of the neighboring island of Koltur and the Vágar coastline 🏝️ 🎞️
  • 📖 Learn about the 1844 climb of the stack and the legend of the petrified troll woman 📜 🕵️
  • 📸 Photograph the “Witch’s Finger” from the dramatic cliff-end viewing point with safety railings 🤳 🎞️
  • 🏔️ Spot the nearby Ravnagjógv gorge, another moody natural wonder just minutes away 🌊 ✨

How to Get There

  • 🚗 Drive to Sandavágur and park at the dedicated lot before the narrow unpaved road begins 🅿️ 🏁
  • 👣 Walk the “Witches Finger Trail” from the village; it is a mostly flat 1.4km gravel path (20-30 mins) 🚶 ✅
  • 🚌 Take bus Route 300 from Tórshavn or Vágar Airport to the Sandavagur Bus Stop 🎟️ 📍
  • 👟 Start your hike from the local café Fiskastykkið for the most authentic village-to-cliff experience 🏠 🏁
  • 🚲 Cycle from the airport (15 mins) or Miðvágur (10 mins) along the main coastal road 🚲 🏁

Travel Tips

  • ⚠️ Stay behind the simple railings at the end of the cliff; the drop-off is sudden and sheer 🛡️ 🕊️
  • 🌬️ Hold onto your gear tightly, as the wind gusts along this stretch of coast can be very powerful 🧥 ✅
  • 🌤️ Check visibility before heading out; on low-cloud days, the 313m tip is often hidden in mist 🔭 🛡️
  • 👟 Wear comfortable walking shoes; while the path is easy, it is made of unpaved gravel and grass 🥾 🛡️
  • 🏛️ Visit the Sandavágur Church afterward to see an authentic Viking-age runestone ⛪ 🛡️

Suggested Itinerary

  • 3:30 PM – Arrive in Sandavágur and begin the easy walk toward the Trøllkonufingur viewpoint 👣 ✨
  • 4:00 PM – Reach the cliff end for photography and a rest while watching the sea birds 📸 🕊️
  • 5:00 PM – Return to the village for a coffee or continue your drive toward the Gásadalur waterfall 🚗 🏁
