Mandraki Harbor

(1)
Mandraki Harbor is the historic port of Rhodes City and one of the most pleasant places for a seaside walk. Known for its iconic landmarks, cafés, and views of the sea, it connects the Old Town with the modern part of the city.

What to See & Do

  • 🦌 See the Harbor Landmarks: Visit the two bronze deer statues (Elefos and Elafina) that stand where the Colossus is said to have rested 🏛️
  • 🌬️ Admire the Three Windmills: View the iconic medieval windmills on the breakwater that once ground grain arriving from merchant ships 🥖
  • 🏰 Visit Saint Nicholas Fortress: Explore the circular 15th-century fort that stands guard at the very tip of the harbor 🛡️
  • Waterfront Promenade: Walk the wide marble-paved path along the Neoclassical buildings of the Italian era 🇮🇹
  • 📸 Sunset Photography: Capture the golden light hitting the masts of the sailboats and the stone walls of the Old Town 🌅

How to Get There

  • 🚶 On Foot: Just a 5-minute walk from the Liberty Gate of the Old Town or the New Market (Nea Agora) ⚓
  • 🚌 By Bus: The main regional bus station (KTEL and RODA) is located right across from the harbor 🚍
  • 🚕 By Taxi: Direct drop-offs are available at the Mandraki Taxi Stand located near the New Market 🏁

Travel Tips

  • 🌅 Golden Hour: This is arguably the best spot in the city for sunset views, as the sun dips behind the Turkish mountains across the water 🔭
  • 👟 Shoes: While the promenade is flat, the walk out to the windmills involves uneven stones—wear comfortable shoes 👣
  • ⛴️ Boat Trips: This is where you find day-trip boats to Symi Island or the Lindos coastline; book in the morning for the best selection 🎫
  • 🏖️ Beach Access: The harbor is just a 10-minute walk away from Elli Beach, the city’s most popular swimming spot 🌊

Suggested Itinerary

  • 05:30 PM – Relax with a Greek frappé at a seaside café while watching the yachts arrive 🥤
  • 📸 06:30 PM – Walk the pier to the Three Windmills 🌬️ and St. Nicholas Fortress for sunset photos 🌅
