Street of the Knights

4
(1)
The Street of the Knights is one of the most famous medieval streets in Europe. Located in Rhodes Old Town, it once housed the inns of the Knights of Saint John and remains remarkably preserved with stone buildings and a timeless atmosphere.

What to See & Do

  • 🚶 Medieval Cobblestones: Walk the original 14th-century stones that have felt the footsteps of thousands of knights 🛡️
  • 🏛️ Historic Inns: View the “Inns” of the various Langues (France, Italy, Provence, Spain, etc.) and look for their unique coats of arms 🛡️
  • 📸 Architecture: Photograph the arched doorways, stone gargoyles, and Gothic windows that define this UNESCO site 📷
  • 🛡️ Knightly History: Observe the heraldic emblems carved into the facades, which tell the story of the Order of Saint John 📜

How to Get There

  • 🚶 On Foot: It starts at Hippocrates Square (near the Archaeological Museum) and leads directly up to the Palace of the Grand Master 🏰
  • 🚕 By Taxi: Ask to be dropped at Liberty Gate or D’Amboise Gate for the most direct walk to the upper or lower end of the street 🏁
  • 🚌 By Bus: Take a local bus to the main station at Rimini Square, then enter the Old Town via the Liberty Gate 🚍

Travel Tips

  • 🌅 Beat the Crowds: Arrive before 09:00 AM to experience the street in near-silence before the cruise ship excursions begin 🤫
  • 👟 Watch Your Step: The cobblestones are smooth and can be very slippery, especially after rain or early morning dew—wear shoes with good grip 👣
  • 🏰 Strategic Path: Use this street as your scenic “climb” toward the Palace of the Grand Master at the top of the hill ⛰️
  • 🛡️ Museum Access: The Archaeological Museum (located at the bottom of the street) offers a great view of the street from its upper balconies 🏛️

Suggested Itinerary

  • 📍 08:30 AM – Begin at the bottom of the Street of the Knights 🏛️ for a peaceful walk uphill ☀️
  • 🏰 09:30 AM – Enter the Palace of the Grand Master 🛡️ right as it opens to explore the halls 🏛️
  • 🏺 11:30 AM – Descend to explore the Archaeological Museum 🗿 or the Decorative Arts Collection 🎨
  • 🥗 01:00 PM – Savor a traditional Greek lunch 🥘 at a taverna in the nearby Jewish Quarter (La Juderia) 🍷
