Penteli Mountain

(1)
Penteli Mountain is a natural retreat located just north of Athens, known for its forested slopes, walking trails, and fresh mountain air. It is a popular destination for hikers, nature lovers, and travelers seeking a break from the city.

What to See & Do

  • 🏛️ Kaisariani Monastery: Explore this 11th-century Byzantine gem ⛪, featuring age-old frescoes, a domed bathhouse, and a tranquil olive grove 🌿.
  • 🚶 Botanical Walk: Follow a 30-minute shaded path 🌿 starting near the monastery, passing through diverse plant species and peaceful ravines.
  • 🕯️ Analipseos Cave Church: Discover this “secret” sanctuary built directly into a cave, often featuring a small pond with goldfish and turtles 🐢.
  • 📸 Taxiarches Hill: Known as the “Balcony of Hymettus,” it offers some of the best panoramic photos 🤳 of the Athens basin and the Acropolis.
  • ⛰️ Evzonas Peak: For a challenge, hike to the highest summit (1,026m) for 360-degree views of Attica and the Aegean Sea 🌊.

How to Get There

  • 🚗 By Car: A 15–20 minute drive from central Athens 🏙️. Parking is available near the entrance of the Aesthetic Forest.
  • 🚕 By Taxi: The most direct way to reach the monastery or trailheads (~€15–€20 from Syntagma Square) 🏁.
  • 🚍 By Bus: Take Bus 224 from Syntagma or Evangelismos Metro 🚉 to the “Kaisariani Cemetery” (last stop). From there, it is a 30-minute uphill walk 👟 into the forest.

Travel Tips

  • 👟 Footwear: Wear sturdy walking shoes 👣; trails are often rocky and uneven.
  • Refreshments: Stop at the Kalopoula Kiosk 🥨, a rustic forest café, for traditional snacks like kayanas (scrambled eggs) or a Greek coffee. Note: It closes early, well before sunset.
  • 🗓️ Monastery Hours: Typically open 08:30–16:00 (Closed Tuesdays). Admission is ~€3 🎟️.
  • 💧 Supplies: Bring water and sun protection, as the higher ridge trails have limited shade ☀️.
