Kencho-ji Temple is the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan and the first-ranked of Kamakura’s prestigious Five Great Zen Temples. Founded in 1253, the temple features grand wooden gates, peaceful gardens, ancient cedar trees, and serene meditation halls. The spacious grounds offer visitors a calm setting to explore Zen culture, nature, and Kamakura’s deep spiritual heritage.

How to Get There

  • 🚉 From Kita-Kamakura Station: A pleasant 15-minute walk along the main road (follow the signs) 🚶
  • 🚌 From Kamakura Station: Take any Enoden bus from Platform 2 toward Ofuna and get off at “Kencho-ji” 🚐
  • 🚕 By Taxi: Roughly a 10-minute drive from the Kamakura Station East Exit 🚕
  • 🅿️ Parking: Limited paid parking (approx. 600 yen/hour) is available right in front of the main gate 🚙

Travel Tips

  • 👟 Wear sturdy shoes: The climb to Hansobo Shrine involves roughly 250 steep stone steps 🥾
