Angammedilla National Park

If you’re looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path nature escape in Sri Lanka, Angammedilla National Park is the hidden gem you shouldn’t miss. Located just west of Polonnaruwa, this lush forest reserve protects the catchment area of the Parakrama Samudra Reservoir, serving as both a wildlife sanctuary and an ecological lifeline for the region.
Far less crowded than other national parks, Angammedilla offers a raw, authentic wilderness experience — perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking true serenity.

Nature & Wildlife :
Originally part of Minneriya-Giritale Nature Reserve, Angammedilla was declared a national park in 2006 to preserve the watershed feeding the ancient irrigation systems of Polonnaruwa.

The park’s dense evergreen forest and rocky landscapes are home to:
Elephants – often seen grazing peacefully near water sources.
Deer & Wild Boar – common in open grasslands.
Monkeys, Peacocks & Birds – making it ideal for birdwatchers.
Rare Flora & Streams – crystal-clear watercourses running through the forest.

Unlike larger safari parks, Angammedilla offers quiet observation rather than vehicle crowds — a more personal encounter with Sri Lanka’s wild heart.
