Somawathiya Chaitya & National Park

The Sacred Somawathiya Stupa :
The Somawathiya Chaitya dates back over 2,000 years to the time of King Gajabahu I (2nd century AD). Legend says it was built by Princess Somawathi, sister of King Kavan Tissa, to honor the Buddha’s teachings.
Revered as one of Sri Lanka’s holiest stupas, it continues to attract pilgrims who come to pay respect and offer flowers, incense, and prayers. The white dome of the stupa gleams brilliantly against the surrounding greenery, creating a peaceful and sacred atmosphere in the heart of nature.

The National Park :
Surrounding the stupa is the Somawathiya National Park, part of Sri Lanka’s great floodplain ecosystem. The park protects vital habitats for countless species, including:
