Perched high on a rugged rock in Anamaduwa, the Paramakanda Raja Maha Vihara is a magnificent
example of ancient Sri Lankan Buddhist architecture and devotion.
Dating back over 2,000 years, this tranquil hilltop temple offers a perfect mix of archaeological wonder,
spiritual atmosphere, and breathtaking panoramic views across the Puttalam plains. Whether you’re a
history enthusiast, a pilgrim, or a traveler seeking scenic tranquility, Paramakanda is a must-visit
destination in north-western Sri Lanka.
A Sacred Temple in the Sky
According to historical records, the Paramakanda Temple was built during the Anuradhapura Kingdom,
around the same time as the nearby Thonigala Rock Inscription. The temple is believed to have been
supported by ancient kings who promoted Buddhism and donated land to monastic communities.
Today, the temple complex is still active — monks live and meditate here, and the cave shrines preserve
centuries-old murals, Buddha statues, and inscriptions that reflect Sri Lanka’s ancient artistic heritage.
