Malwila Ruins

0
(0)
Tucked away deep inside the lush dry-zone forest of Anamaduwa, the Malwila Ruins are one of Sri Lanka’s least-visited yet most mysterious archaeological treasures. Once the site of a grand ancient Buddhist monastery, today it stands as a quiet reminder of the island’s forgotten past — overgrown by trees, surrounded by birdsong, and steeped in spiritual calm. For travelers who love off-the-beaten-path heritage experiences, Malwila offers an incredible combination of archaeology, adventure, and natural beauty.

A Glimpse into Ancient Times:
Archaeologists believe the Malwila Monastery Complex dates back to the Anuradhapura period (3rd century BCE – 10th century CE).
The site covers several acres and contains remnants of stone pillars, moonstones (sandakadapahana), guard stones, stupa bases, and monastic residences. These structures suggest that Malwila was once a thriving center for Buddhist monks, supported by local rulers and ancient irrigation systems.
Though the exact identity of the monastery is still being studied, it’s considered one of the oldest monastic complexes in the Puttalam region — a forgotten sibling to great sites like Mihintale and Ritigala.
